If you’re learning Korean as a foreign language, the biggest Korean dictionary isn’t always the most useful one.

Instead of starting with the Standard Korean Language Dictionary (표준국어대사전), there’s another official dictionary you should know:

The Korean Basic Dictionary — 한국어기초사전.

And yes, it’s also available with translations in 11 languages.

The Korean Basic Dictionary is an official online dictionary created by Korea’s National Institute of Korean Language specifically for Korean learners and teachers.

That difference matters.

While a general Korean dictionary can sometimes give you definitions that are difficult to understand as a learner, the Korean Basic Dictionary was designed to make Korean vocabulary easier to learn. It contains around 50,000 vocabulary entries and provides learner-friendly definitions, practical example sentences, pronunciation information, and vocabulary-level guidance.

So instead of simply telling you what a Korean word means, it can help you understand how the word is actually used.

For example, dictionary entries may include:

🔊 Pronunciation
📝 Part of speech
💬 Korean definitions
🌎 Translated definitions
✏️ Example sentences
↔️ Synonyms and antonyms
⭐ Vocabulary level

That makes it especially useful if you are studying Korean for TOPIK, university, a Korean language program, or everyday life in Korea.

And here’s the best part: it supports 11 languages 🌍

The National Institute of Korean Language also provides Korean–foreign language learner dictionaries based on the Korean Basic Dictionary.

You can use it in:

🇬🇧 English
🇯🇵 Japanese
🇨🇳 Chinese
🇫🇷 French
🇪🇸 Spanish
🇷🇺 Russian
🇻🇳 Vietnamese
🇲🇳 Mongolian
🇹🇭 Thai
🇮🇩 Indonesian
🇸🇦 Arabic

The official site specifically says these translations are based on the headwords and definitions of the Korean Basic Dictionary and are particularly useful for beginner Korean learners.

The English version, for example, lets you search in Korean or English, while showing the Korean definition together with an English explanation.

If you’re learning Korean, bookmark this dictionary now.

Don’t rely only on Google Translate when you meet a new Korean word.

Try this instead:

1. Search the Korean word.
2. Read the learner-friendly definition.
3. Check the example sentences.
4. Listen to the pronunciation.
5. See how the word is actually used.
